What is Teff?
What is Teff?
Teff is an ancient grain native to Ethiopia, prized for its rich nutritional profile and essential role in traditional dishes like injera. Naturally gluten-free, high in iron, and packed with protein and fiber, teff is one of the world’s smallest — yet most powerful — grains.
Teff is typically farmed by smallholder farmers using traditional, labor-intensive methods passed down through generations. In rural Ethiopia, most farmers rely on oxen and manual tools, facing challenges such as limited access to modern equipment, lack of irrigation infrastructure, market volatility, and climate unpredictability.
At The Injera Project,
we aim to bridge the gap between heritage and innovation — supporting farmers with regenerative organic practices, clean energy, and equitable market access. By improving both the farming and processing of teff, we strive to enhance income, reduce labor burdens, and ensure long-term sustainability for communities like Gemashe.
Our mission is to promote food and climate equity by creating a fair and transparent supply chain that benefits smallholder farmers and underserved communities. Teff is not just a grain — it's a catalyst for change in global nutrition, agriculture, and women’s empowerment.
